Homework

Homework at Glashieburn varies from stage to stage.  However, after a recent survey of parents the majority felt homework was important.  Staff have been advised to make homework as active and with clear instructions to parents/pupils as possible.

Therefore, the following guidelines were created…

Primary 1-3:

Homework is issued weekly.

Reading : Twice a week.

Spelling:  New sounds and tricky words sent home to learn.

Maths:  Can be a variety of ICT based, task maps for pupil choice or a particular follow up.

When a talk is to be prepared or an additional piece of homework done there shall be no maths issued that week.

All homework at P1-3 should take a maximum of 30 minutes per week.

Primary 4 – 7:

Homework is issued weekly.

Reading : If a pupil can fluently read and staff feel they can comprehend the text they read confidently they will be issued a ‘First Minister’s Reading Passport’ to record their own personal reading choices.  The school will run an incentive scheme each year to encourage personal reading at home.

A pupil may still get ‘set’ reading home to build on fluency and comprehension.  Staff will ensure parents are aware of the reasons behind this.

Spelling:  New spelling word list / tricky words sent home to learn.

Maths:  Can be a variety of ICT based, task maps for pupil choice or a particular follow up.

When a talk is to be prepared or an additional piece of homework done there shall be no maths issued that week.

All homework at P4-7 should take a maximum of 40 minutes per week.

Homework can build a pupil’s self organisational skills and personal motivation, which will stand them in good stead for when they need to revise in secondary school.  However, homework is non compulsory.  Should homework become a battle we ask you to seek advice from staff so we can plan a way forward together.
