Primary 3 Learning Leaflet

Information for Parents

Term 4

 Numeracy

This term Primary 3 will continue to focus on multiplication. They will be focusing on using a range of formal and mental strategies to learn their 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 times tables. We will also be covering division, data handling and time this term. Primary 3 will also be recapping on their number process skills and will follow a short unit focused on addition, subtraction and place value.

Through daily CLIC sessions they will be developing a variety of mental math strategies

Literacy

Writing: This term in writing we will be focusing on both functional and imaginative writing. Through our IDL context we will be writing for a range of purposes. This will include: story writing using imaginative and creative stimulus, fact files, posters, newspaper articles and leaflets.

Grammar: This term in grammar we will be learning how to use a thesaurus, paragraphing, using speech marks and past, present and future tense.

Talking and Listening: This term Primary 3 will be asked to prepare a short class talk based on their IDL context. This will focus on using body language, tone and answering audience questions. They will continue to contribute their opinions within class circle times and further extend their debating skills within the class tasks.

Reading: This term in reading the class will be focusing on retrieving relevant information from fiction and non-fiction texts. They will be learning to source information online and use the information correctly. They will also be learning to scan a text for information. They will continue to use book detective skills within their reading tasks and encouraged to read with fluency and accuracy.

The children will also be focusing on non-fiction texts through their IDL context and will be learning how to use a glossary, index and contents pages independently.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 will be focusing on developing skills and techniques and improving their level of performance. They will be covering Athletics and Orienteering this term.

The class will also be learning about Food and Nutrition in their health lessons with Miss Cunningham.

IDL

P3’s IDL context this term will focus on ‘My Local Area’. We will be covering a range of social and  geographical experiences and outcomes related to this topic.

Some of the areas that Primary 3 will be learning about this term include:

  • Geography and map reading skills.
  • Creating maps using accurate keys.
  • Identifying features of the landscape.
  • Identifying our country and continent using a world map.
  • Researching the historical context of Bridge of Don.
  • Researching and learning about local landmarks, buildings and places of interest.
  • Visiting important local buildings.
  • Going on a  variety of community based trips including the local library, residential homes, sports centre and outdoor areas.

Information for Parents

Term 3

 Numeracy

Primary three will continue to focus on subtraction this term. We will be extending our learning by subtracting 2 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers (with and without regrouping). We will be developing our number skills through using a range of subtraction methods. We will also be working with money up to £10 and transferring our skills of addition and subtraction within this context. We will be focusing on multiplication and exploring and learning the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. Primary 3 will also be learning about symmetry and angles this term.

Through daily CLIC sessions they will be developing a variety of mental math strategies

Literacy

Writing: This term in writing we will be focusing on both functional and imaginative writing. Through our IDL context we will be writing for a range of purposes. This will include: fact files, instructions, characterisation based writing, diary entries, newspaper articles and some basic script writing. As part of our writing focus this term we will be learning how to effectively use a written and pictorial plan to enhance our written pieces.

Grammar: This term in grammar we will be focusing on alphabetical order and we will extend this by investigating how to use a dictionary independently. We will also be learning about proper nouns, adverbs, using a comma appropriately and how to correctly use a and an.

Talking and Listening: This term Primary 3 will be focusing on their class assembly as part of their talking and listening. We will be developing our confidence in engaging with an audience using good pace, gesture and tone. The children will also be asked to prepare a short class talk based on Ancient Egypt.

Reading: This term in reading the class will be focusing on evaluation and characterisation. The children will be exploring character actions, emotions and their opinions of these. They will also be creating book reviews and evaluating the texts they read through explaining their preferences, likes and dislikes of a text. The children will also be focusing on non-fiction texts through their IDL context and will be learning how to use a glossary, index and contents pages independently.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 will be focusing on developing skills and techniques and improving their level of performance and fitness. They will be developing skills in teamwork and cooperation and learning to extend their fitness levels through various activities.

The class will also be learning about Food and Nutrition in their health lessons with Miss Cunningham.

IDL

P3’s  IDL context this term will focus on ‘Ancient Egypt’. We will be covering a range of historical and geographical experiences and outcomes related to this topic.

Some of the areas that Primary 3 will be learning about this term include:

  • Geography, landscape and map reading skills.
  • Social order of Ancient Egypt
  • History of the pyramids
  • The life of a pharaoh
  • Food and drink in Ancient Egypt
  • Childhood in Ancient Egypt
  • Death rituals – including mummification
  • Egyptian recipes
  • Traditional Egyptian tales

Primary 3 Learning Leaflet –  Term 2

Information for Parents

Numeracy

Primary three will continue to focus on Addition this term as well as building on their learning of Subtraction. We will be learning to add and subtract horizontally and vertically within 100 and learning strategies to carry over tens and bridge across place.

Primary 3 will also be learning about shape, position and movement through a variety of activities this term. They will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes and learning about the properties. The class will also be investigating patterns and relationships and they will be introduced to pattern using shape, a variety of materials and number.

The children will be continuing to learn and consolidate the 2, 5 and 10 times table. Through daily CLIC sessions they will be developing a variety of mental math strategies.

Literacy

Writing/ Grammar: This term we will build on our learning of adjectives, verbs and nouns in our grammar lessons. We will also be focusing on punctuation and how to use a range of marks appropriately within our writing. The children will be writing for a variety of purposes including poetry, functional and imaginative.

Talking and Listening: We will continue to develop our talking and listening skills through listening to fables and responding to philosophy stimulus. We have also been enjoying listening and engaging with Newsround and will continue to discuss topical world issues within the classroom this term.

Reading: A focus within reading this term will be developing the children’s prediction skills (using context clues such as title, illustrations and the blurb to make predictions about a story). We will also be investigating the main aspects of a text including character, setting, main events and feelings. We will be looking at an author’s word choice and be working to create alternatives to simple words.

 

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 will be focusing on balance, rhythm and control through the context of skipping. We will be learning a range of different skipping techniques through group and partner activities.

As part of our health the children will be learning about fire and firework safety. They will also be learning about Road safety in their health lessons with Miss Cunningham.

 IDL

Our class IDL context this term will focus on ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ novel written by Jill Tomlinson. We will be covering a range of experiences and outcomes related to this topic.

Some of the areas that Primary 3 will be learning about this term include:

  • Nocturnal creatures
  • Day and Night
  • Our Senses
  • A range of literacy activities related to the novel.

Information for Parents

Term 1

Numeracy

Primary 3 will be focusing on Number Processes and Addition this term. They will be exploring ordering numbers to 100, reading and writing numbers to 100, sequencing numbers to 1000, odd and even numbers and investigating place value. The class will be learning how to add horizontally and vertically within 100 and mentally within 20.

The children will be continuing to learn and consolidate the 2, 5 and 10 times table. Through daily CLIC sessions they will be developing a variety of mental math strategies.

Literacy

Writing/ Grammar: The class will be using the Big Writing Initial Impact lessons for the first 6 weeks of the term to revise and consolidate the 4 VCOP strategies. The children will be creating a variety of different writing pieces focused on improving and up-levelling their work.

Reading: The class will be focusing on developing their summarising skills through their weekly reading books, library books and non-fiction texts. They will be learning to identify the main sequence of events, retell the story in their own words and select and talk about the main aspects of a text including characters, setting, events and non-fiction facts. Alongside this focus the children will complete weekly comprehension and book detective activities as well as develop their expression and fluency through guided reading sessions.

Talking and Listening: The class will participate in Philosophy this term as part of their talking and listening focus. Philosophy sessions will focus on responding to discussions, learning to make relevant contributions and listening and responding to peer contributions.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 will be focusing on Possession games in P.E this term. This will include participating in a range of ball familiarisation activities including dribbling, passing, catching and throwing. They will be focusing on developing balance and control, gross motor skills and coordination and fluency. The children will be learning to recognise and understand relevant rules and procedures in a game and understand that different activities require different roles.

IDL

Our class IDL focus this term is ‘Under the Sea’. The children will be covering a range of social studies and science outcomes. We are very excited to get started on our new topic!

Some of the areas that Primary 3 will be learning about this term include:

  • Under water animals
  • Food chains
  • Habitats
  • Pollution
  • Levels of the ocean
  • Coastguard and lifeboat emergency services
  • Water safety

Additional class information:

Homework:

  • Homework will be handed out to the class on a Monday and is due on a Friday.
  • The children will be issued with a new reading book on a Monday each week. Reading homework will consist of a ‘talking task’ (from the reading homework grid) to be discussed at home.

P.E:

  • Primary 3’s P.E days are a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure P.E kits are in school on these days.

Information for Parents

Term 4

Numeracy

Primary 3 will focus on telling the time as part of their  learning this term. The class will build on their skills in using an analogue clock and develop their ability to use quarter past and quarter to independently. The children will also be investigating digital time as part of this focus. Furthermore, the children will develop their calendar skills and they will work with time durations using months, weeks and days.

Additionally the children will also be exploring the topic of measurement. The class will be investigating length, measurement, area and volume through a variety of active methods.

Primary 3 will continue to consolidate their multiplication learning through focused class lessons and homework tasks. The class will learn how to multiply using horizontal and vertical methods. The children will also develop their skills in division and begin to make the link between division and multiplication.

Literacy

Writing –  The children will be focusing on non-fiction and functional writing this term linked to the stimulus of our IDL topic Ancient Egypt. This will include report writing, instructional writing and leaflets. Additionally the children will be given lots of opportunities for imaginary writing this term through the historical contexts.

Reading – This term Primary 3 will be focusing on developing skills in evaluating through their weekly reading books.. The children will continue to develop their questioning skills through the use of Blooms cards as well as develop expression and fluency. This term the children will also be focusing on non-fiction texts and developing skills in finding and selecting appropriate information.

Talking and Listening: This term Primary 3 will develop their skills in presenting appropriate information to an audience using the stimulus of Newsround. This will include developing skills in summarising and selecting important information.  The children will also be extending their debating skills through weekly class debates and will engage in a philosophy lessons.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 will be working on tennis this term in PE. The class will be extending their ball skills to netball. They will be learning the rules of the game alongside developing skills in team work, coordination and movement.

For the first 4 weeks of this term Primary 3 will also be working with sports coaches from RGU on a variety of different sports skills including; tennis, rugby and football.

IDL

Primary 3 have chosen to focus on a history context this term and they will be developing their historical knowledge of Ancient Egypt. All the boys and girls in Primary 3 have shown great enthusiasm for their new topic so far and are all very excited to discover some of the amazing facts! Some of the areas that will be covered are:

-Mapping and geography skills (investigating countries and continents).

-Pyramids.

-Ancient Egyptian Gods

-Ancient Egyptian’s daily lives.

-The importance of the River Nile.

-Mummification.

-Comparing and contrasting Ancient Egypt and modern day.

Other News 

  • Homework will be handed out to the class on Mondays and is due on a Friday.
  • The children need to bring P.E kits on Mondays and Fridays.
  • The children will be issued with a new reading book on a Monday each week.

Information for Parents

Term 3

Numeracy

Primary 3 have been very successful in their numeracy and maths this term and have worked extremely hard to consolidate and learn new concepts. The children have shown increased confidence in using money within real life contexts. P3 have learned how to add money up to £5 and beyond and are confident in selecting appropriate change from £5. The children are also able to use decimal points to convert money from pence to pounds.  The class have also have shown success with the concept of estimating and rounding and have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We have also been continuing to work on our multiplication tables and are making excellent progress in this area.

Literacy

This term Primary 3 have shown a great enthusiasm for imaginative writing and lots of our literacy activities have focused on the stimulus of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We have learned how to create an imaginary character and have created our own imaginary factory rooms. The children have been continuing to develop their self and peer assessment skills and are using VCOP with an increased independence to enhance their writing.

This term Primary 3 have been developing skills in prediction through their weekly reading books and the class novel study. They have also used skills in summarising to identify the main events of a text. The class have deepened their understanding of character and plot analysis.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 3 have been developing their tennis skills this term and everyone has worked extremely hard in this area. We have been focusing on hand eye coordination and racket control.

 

IDL

Primary 3 have thoroughly enjoyed their novel study this term and have been inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. As part of their topic everyone created a shoe box room for Willy Wonka’s factory. Everyone made a fantastic effort and should be very proud of their creations.
