Little Engineers

We have been having trouble logging onto the blog from school but it seems to be fixed now!

Before the holidays we were very lucky to have some engineers come into Primary 1 BUT they had a big problem! They challenged the children to make ramps high enough to help Superman get back to Earth from space. Thankfully Primary 1 were very clever and they managed to design, build and test ramps which helped to launch Superman right through space and back to Earth!

Fairyland

We had a very exciting visit from a dragon today! He asked for our help, Fairyland is being destroyed and he needs somewhere to rebuild all the Fairytale character’s homes. Primary 1 and 2 thought that they definitely had the skills required to build a whole Fairytale land in our area. We got straight to work, we’ve built a beanstalk, made a golden egg, castle, clouds and a golden harp. Today we carried on with our important job and planted lots of our own beanstalks. We wrote questions to the dragon asking him for a bit more information about him and his friends so hopefully he will write to us again.

Reading

We have learnt lots of new sounds this term and have begun to learn about double sounds. We have been great at identifying the sounds that we recognise in our reading books and lots of us are becoming confident at identify common words quickly and accurately. We have discussed the features of lots of our books and have made predictions about our guided books, discussing what we think might happen

Writing

Primary 1 have worked incredibly hard on their writing this term and I have been very impressed to see lots of the children become much more independent. We are focusing on adding describing words and reading back our work to make sure it makes sense. Some of the children still need some reminders to add full stops and capital letters.

Maths

This term we revisited addition and subtraction. We are now a lot more confident at using a number line to count back and on. We extended our learning to numbers within 20 and some children came up with very tricky number sentences using 2 digits! Primary 1 learned about fractions this term and are confident with identifying halves and quarters. The children also developed their awareness of time and had the opportunity to engage with lots of activities to help them tell the time to half past and o’clock.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 1 have taken part in lots of gym activities including circuits. We have discussed how to be a good friend to each other and are trying to be kind to everyone. The children have also been learning about personal hygiene and have taken part in activities to help them learn about keeping their hands clean, not spreading germs and brushing their teeth.

IDL

Primary 1 loved their topic on Space and learned lots about the different planets. They were able to name the planets and put them in order with some support. They also had a trip to Satrosphere to learn more about Earth. The children learned about the earth’s rotation around the Sun and the Moons rotation around the Earth. We also took part in Chinese New Year activities and made some lovey lanterns.

Exciting Engineering

Last week as part of Science week P1 and P1/2 had a really great workshop! Two very important engineers from Petrofac and Wood Group came in to teach us about their jobs. We learned  that they build lots of different things and are great problem solvers. We worked in groups to build rocket launches from cardboard and tape. We tried to make our launchers tall enough to launch a ball into space. The winning team managed to get their ball to Neptune! Well done everybody.

How to catch a star!

Primary 1 have been reading ‘How to Catch a Star’ this week about a little boy who wants to go to space in his rocket. The only problem is his rocket is broken! The children designed lovely new rockets for the boy today by carefully measuring different materials in a range of colours. We added these to rocket shapes! They look fab.

Fantastic Phonics!

I have been so impressed with the children’s phonics work since Christmas! They have been working really hard to segment and blend CVC words and some of them are now having a go at tricky words and longer words. Some of the activities we have been engaging with this week are making play dough words, building words from letter cubes and writing as many words as we can on the big paper. Keep up the hard work!

Satrosphere

The children had a great time at Satrosphere on Tuesday. They took part in a workshop about planet earth and the different animals you can find here. They touched a stick insect which the teachers were less excited about. We were very lucky to be able to go into the planetarium and learn more about space and if aliens exist. Primary 1 and 2 also had great fun engaging with the activities on the centre floor. A big thank you to the parent helpers for all your support!

P1C Learning Leaflet

Term 3 January 2016

Numeracy

This term the children will be learning to tell the time. All of the boys and girls will have an opportunity to make their own clocks, learn about the features of a clock and then learn to tell the time to o’clock. We will also be discussing daily routines, days of the week and the months of the year.

We will also be learning more about number this term. We will be counting to 100 and beginning to count in 10’s and 2’s. The children will be developing their understanding of place value by partitioning two digit numbers.

Primary 1 will now be taking a ‘Beat That’ mental maths challenge on a Friday which is based on their ‘Learn Its’. They have been working really hard at home and in class to learn these so I’m sure they will enjoy this challenge.

Literacy

This term in literacy the children will begin to look at different forms of writing such as creating their own lists and making mind maps to describe a thin or person. They will continue to practise their personal writing focusing on correct sentence structure. The children will be challenged to write independently without the yellow pen by thinking of their own sentence, saying it aloud and then sounding it out. Primary 1 will begin to look at connectives and how to up-level their writing.

Primary 1 are almost finished learning their single sounds and will begin to learn about double letter sounds. They will continue to be encouraged to segment and blend any unfamiliar words to help them with their reading.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 1 will continue to have PE on a Wednesday and a Friday this term. We will also continue to look at what makes a good friend and discuss what makes people feel different emotions.

IDL

Our topic this term is space. The children have come up with great ‘Big Questions’ such as: why is there day and night? Why don’t we float away? Are aliens real? Can you stand on the rings of Saturn?

We will be learning about all of these things and looking at each of the planets. We will also focus on two stories to enhance our imaginative and creative learning. These stories are: Whatever Next! By Jill Murphy and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers.
