Information for Parents

Term 4

Numeracy

This term, Primary 4S will be working on telling the time on analogue and digital clocks (minutes past and minutes to) and will begin to make links between 12 and 24 hour clocks. We will also be calculating durations and measuring the time taken to complete a range of activities. The children will develop their abilities to estimate and measure weight and volume/capacity using appropriate instruments and units. The pupils will also be applying their division skills learnt in term 3 through fractions. We will exploring how to gain a fraction of a whole, a fraction of a quantity and a fraction of a position along a number line. We will be focusing on halves, quarters, fifths and tens especially.

Literacy

This term, through comprehension we are looking closely at sentence structure, inference and up-leveling VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. We will also be expanding our dictionary and thesaurus work. We are continuing to practise our joined writing in words and sentences, ensuring correct formation and height of letters.

As a class, we are taking part in the national young writing competition, looking to develop use of paragraphs and detailed description. We will also be using our imagination through a functional piece of writing, constructing letters to and from Vikings. As our topic this term is Vikings, both functional and imaginative pieces will take this focus.

Health and Wellbeing

The pupils will be exploring food chains, and exploring exactly where their own and Viking food would have come from. P4S will exploring seasonality and the importance of agriculture. Additionally, we will be looking into our metal wellbeing, expanding our resilience through learning different techniques for handling our emotions and putting ourselves into scenarios.

In PE, are lucky to be having some hockey lessons with students from the Robert Gordon University this term.  We will also be practising athletic skills in preparation for Sport’s Day. This term pupils will also have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons at Northfield Swimming pool, developing safety in the water alongside other swimming skills.

IDL

As mentioned, our topic this term will be the Vikings. Through discussion with the pupils, we have developed a plan together of key information that the class would like to explore. We will be looking into the lives of Vikings and comparing them to our own, taking on our own imaginary occupations and looking at Viking home construction. Through different texts, we will be learning about the different values and religious beliefs of the Vikings, exploring their many Gods and comparing similarities to our own. Additional through RME, we are continuing to explore the key features of the values of Christianity which are expressed in stories from the New Testament.

Through technology, the children will have the opportunity to further develop their skills in creating, capturing and manipulating sounds, text and images to communicate ideas and information creatively. Additionally through expressive arts, we are going to explore rhythm and create our own Viking chants, songs and images.

Other News 

 

The children are continuing to earn house points as well as marbles. Our Viking clans this term are; The Viking Gods, Thor in War, The Crazy Viking Teens, The Tribe of Horns and The Loki Tribe.
