Primary 1 Learning Leaflet
Information for Parents
Term 1: January – March 2016
The children will be learning more about number this term. We will be counting to 100 and beginning to count in 2’s and 10’s. The children will be learning about odd and even numbers.
This term the children will be learning to tell the time. All of the boys and girls will have an opportunity to make their own clocks, learn about the features of a clock and then learn to tell the time to o’clock. We will also be discussing daily routines, days of the week and the months of the year.
Towards the end of term 3 we will revisit addition and subtraction to consolidate and further develop the skills we learned in term 2.
Primary 1 will now be taking a ‘Beat That’ mental maths challenge on a Friday which is based on their ‘Learn Its’. They have been working really hard at home and in class to learn these so I’m sure they will enjoy this challenge.
Primary 1 are almost finished learning their single sounds and will begin to learn about double letter sounds. They will continue to be encouraged to segment and blend any unfamiliar words to help them with their reading.
We will continue to send home two reading books per week. We will be checking word walls once a week but we encourage the boys and girls to practice their words every night along with their reading.
The children will be developing their writing skills by retelling familiar stories, acting them out, creating story maps and writing sentences to describe important events in the story.
Health and Wellbeing
P1’s PE days are Wednesday and a Friday. Please remember that your child should bring a full PE kit (white t-shirt, black/navy shorts) on these days.
Miss Cunningham will continue to take the children for Drama and Health this term.
This term, we have a very special job to do for a Friendly Dragon who visited our class. The Dragon informed us that fairyland is being destroyed and forgotten about because not enough children are reading fairy tales. We have decided to explore a new fairy tale each week as part of our topic and recreate fairyland in our classroom area. We are very excited about working together on this project and we really hope we can save fairyland for all the characters and the Friendly Dragon.
