P2/3M Learning Leaflet
This term P3 have been developing their skills in mental and written addition within 100 and are beginning subtraction. They have been learning some new strategies which they can use to help them – hundred square, empty number lines, partitioning, jottings or drawings, column/chimney sums – they all have their own preferences!
P2 are also developing their skills in addition and subtraction. So far they’ve been learning to add numbers within 20 and count on without having to ‘start again’. They have been developing their own strategies to help them, for example using concrete materials (cubes, counters, beads) number lines or their fingers.
As a class, P2/3 are investigating different 2D and 3D shapes. They are learning to name, draw, tile and copy and continue patterns and list their properties.
Reading – Primary 2/3 are continuing to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books this term, using their knowledge of phonics to support them. They are also continuing to build on their sight vocabulary through common word activities. All groups are continuing to develop their comprehension skills through discussion and ‘read to write’ tasks.
Writing – This term P2/3 are learning to write for different purposes, particularly in poetry and instructional texts. They are learning to create different types of poems using adjectives, nouns and rhyme. Using their learning experiences as a context for writing, they are learning to create instructions using lists, time openers and ‘bossy verbs’.
Listening and Talking – As part of our IDL topic, P2/3 have been listening to the novel ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. They are continuing to learn how to participate as a listener and speaker in a group, make relevant comments and ask appropriate questions.
Health and Well-Being
P2/3’s PE days have changed this term. They are now on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. This term P2/3 are developing their focus, concentration and co-ordination in gym using ball skills and skipping.
In health, P2/3 are learning about ‘stranger danger’ and ‘be safe, be seen’ with Miss Cunningham. (Please see Miss Cunningham’s learning leaflet for more information.)
At the end of last term P2/3 voted for ‘Light and Sound’ as their topic and are thoroughly enjoying it. Through science and technology investigations and listening to our class novel, they are learning lots of fantastic facts about materials, nature and wildlife. P2/3 are also learning about light celebrations and festivals in different cultures and religions. We will be going on a ‘Sound Safari’ very soon with the Countryside Ranger too!
Christmas is fast approaching and show rehearsals have begun! The boys and girls have been enthusiastically learning their songs and singing their hearts out! You’re in for a treat J
