Nursery Learning Leaflet August 2016
We would like to wish both our returning and new families to Glashieburn Nursery a warm welcome. We also welcome the children, staff and parents from Greenbrae Nursery as they join us until their new Nursery building work is complete.
This term we are getting to know one another, we are sharing our likes and dislikes, information about our families and friends and getting to know the staff in Nursery. The children will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings and to help staff organise and set up the Nursery using children’s opinions and ideas.
During Term 1 the children have contributed lots to the planning and activities in the Nursery helping us to change and organise the room. We have welcomed lots of new children to our class and they have all settled well. Together we have created a new target wall encouraging the children to identify and talk about what they want to get better at.
We are exploring numbers all the time in Nursery, through singing, our play, outdoor learning and during snack time. This term we will be exploring numbers in the world around us and developing the children’s awareness of the days of the week and months of the year through songs.
The children have enjoyed exploring the numeracy resource “Numicon”, they have been printing and exploring the new resource. We have been doing lots of positional language activities through PE sessions, outdoor play and through retelling and acting out the story “Going on a bear hunt”. The children have participated in regular singing opportunities and have recently began learning some autumn related songs and rhymes.
Health and Well Being
We are working to develop our relationships and friendships, get to know the adults in the Nursery and becoming familiar with the rules and routines of Nursery. Staff continue to develop and embed the snack routine and are encouraging the children to be independent in doing this. Snack is a social activity in Nursery providing lots of opportunities for lots of cross curricular links including literacy and numeracy experiences. We have also recently introduced “Taster Tuesday”, so far this term we have tried olives and seaweed, we have had mixed reviews from the children!
We have now tried lots more new foods for Taster Tuesday including avocado and beetroot, we will continue to try new foods next term. The returning children have been fantastic at helping the new children to follow the routines of the Nursery and lots of new friendships continue to develop. We have also enjoyed getting to know the children and staff from Greenbrae Nursery and children continue to play together during the Nursery sessions.
The afternoon children have enjoyed weekly outings in the community, we have been to lots of places including the beach, Asda, the park, our Wee Green Space and the Scotch Bonnet. The morning children have recently started revisiting our Wee Green Space and have co-operated well with each other and continued to develop relationships with the staff and parent helpers during these sessions.
In the near future we will be implementing a key worker system in Nursery. Each staff member will have a group of children for which they will be responsible for updating and adding information to the groups Learning Journeys. A display will be made in Nursery to show you which adult is your child’s Key Worker.
Our Key Worker system is now up and running and we are working hard on our Learning Journeys. The children are showing a keen interest in these. Please check and add to these folders regularly to help us record your child’s developments both at Nursery and at home.
As always, please share any concerns or questions you have with a member of the Nursery Team.
