P2/3M Learning Leaflet Term 1
Maths and Numeracy
Many of the children in Primary 2/3 have become fascinated with the size of sea creatures! So much so that we have decided that our first maths topic will be measurement! The children will be further developing their skills in using standard and non-standard units of measurement to measure length, weight and capacity.
P2/3 will also be working hard to improve their mental maths skills through Big Maths CLIC sessions. They will be learning more about number processes, addition and subtraction and putting their skills to the test in their weekly ‘Beat That!’ challenges.
Reading – Primary 2/3 will be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books this term. Our topic has given us some fantastic books to read and enjoy together. The children will be further developing their skills in independently decoding ‘tricky’ words using their knowledge of phonics. They will also be continuing to build on their sight vocabulary through common word activities. Groups will be regularly challenged through comprehension tasks related to their reading books.
Writing – This term Primary 2/3 will be using VCOP to develop their writing. They will be working towards adding exciting ‘wow words’ (vocabulary), ‘cool connectives’, ‘outstanding openers’ and ‘powerful punctuation’ to interest their readers. P2/3 will experience creating both imaginative and factual texts – look out for some of our ‘Under the Sea’ fact files!
Health and Well-Being
Primary 2/3 will have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This term they will be developing their movement and game skills. They will be learning about space, travel and direction, game related possession and decision making.
In health, P2/3 will be learning more about friendships, personal qualities and respect with Miss Cunningham. (Please see Miss Cunningham’s learning leaflet for more information.) Within our IDL topic, they will also be learning about water safety and how to respond in emergency situations – including a visit from the RNLI.
P2/3 are very enthusiastic about their ‘Under the Sea!’ topic this term. With lots of exciting things to learn and explore, from food chains to keeping safe, they will be sure to take home some interesting facts and creations! As we are so close to the seashore, any items, stories or even visitors the boys and girls would like to share with the class would be warmly welcomed!
- PE kits will be required on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Homework will be issued on Mondays and due on Fridays.
- New reading books will be issued on a Monday or a Wednesday depending on the text.
