Primary 1 Learning Leaflet
Information for Parents
Term 1: August – October 2016
During the first term in Primary 1 we will be focusing on numbers to 10. The children will be learning to form numbers correctly and identify them within the number line using the language before, after, in-between, 1 more and 1 less. The children will also be learning to count up to 20 and beyond. We will be focusing on counting skills through a variety of active tasks. Later in the term Primary 1 will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes. They will learn how to describe the different properties of these shapes and identify sides and corners.
During Term 1 the children will begin to develop their skills and knowledge in phonics as they are introduced to their initial sounds. We will be practising our phonics skills through various daily activities and games such as writing, matching and sorting.
As the children are introduced to reading in Primary 1 we will begin by learning about the characters from Oxford Reading Tree scheme. As we progress in Term 1 the boys and girls will move on to retelling the stories from their books using the pictures as a guide. We will also begin to develop their ability to recall the taught common words.
In writing we will be working on correct letter formation through various daily activities. We will also be working on fine and gross motor skills to help develop their pencil control in preparation for ‘Taught Writing’.
Health and Wellbeing
In P1 our PE days will be on a Wednesday and Friday. Please remember your child should bring a full PE kit (white t-shirt, black/navy shorts) on these days. During the first term we will be working on spatial awareness in the gym hall, team work and taking turns through various games. Please encourage your child to practise getting dressed on their own and help them by avoiding ‘tricky’ clothes on PE days.
We have been working on establishing rules and routines. In the next few weeks the children will have the opportunity to choose a mini topic which they are interested in as a cohort. You can help your child at home with this by discussing any topic interests they may wish to learn more about.
Miss Cunningham will be working with the children during various sessions throughout the week. She will be covering Health and Wellbeing and Expressive Arts over the year.
Homework will be given out on a Monday. Any completed homework should be handed in on a Friday for new sounds can be added.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us, We are happy to help.
