Information for Parents

Term 1 August to October 2015

Numeracy

This term we are concentrating on continuing to build our knowledge of number bonds. up to 10, up to 20 , up to 100 and beyond 100

Some will be  also learning about our times tables of 2,3,5 and 10  while others are continuing to learn all the tables (2 to 10)

Another group will be continuing to build on their knowledge of place value by adding and taking away numbers initially to 100 and then numbers beyond 100.

Our practical Maths will be concentrating on collecting information from surveys, collating it and then making either a graph or diagram about the information. We will also be reading information from graphs or charts.

Reflection

The children have all been very enthusiastic about learning their tables. Hit the button was very successful. The group that have been learning about place value, addition and subtraction are very excited as they are all managing very well even when we add a column or two extra!

Handling data has been fun as we have been learning about tally marks and how to make them into different graphs. We still need to focus on Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams which we will cover next term.

Literacy

This term all the reading groups will continue to build confidence in reading aloud and tackling unfamiliar words.

We will also be looking at how to find information from the stories we have read which will help answer set questions. This helps them develop understanding of what they have read.

In writing we will initially be looking at VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation.) These are the tools which help develop better sentence structure.

We will continue to build on our knowledge about phonics, covering blends and some of the common words. The spelling sounds will be covered over two week blocks to allow the children to consolidate what they have learned.

Reflection

We have a great term reading a variety of stories.  We have looked at what we have been reading through different activities. The children have really enjoyed finding the missing words and cut and paste activities to get the correct sequence of events.

The children have really enjoyed their VCOP writing and extending sentences. We have used fantastic wow words, looked closely at connections, using different openers and also worked on what punctuation marks to use.

The spelling activities have proved successful as nearly all children have thoroughly enjoyed learning their spelling this way.

Health and Wellbeing

This term we are concentrating on looking at emotions and how different emotions make us feel. We are looking at friendships and how they make us feel and what we can do when they don’t work. Controlling our emotions and the strategies to help us cope when they go wrong, will also be explored.

Gross motors will also be concentrating on how to control our body movements. This term we will be moving in different directions in a variety of different ways. (Changing directions and following different paths in the gym while bouncing a ball or balancing a bean bag are some examples)

Reflection

We have enjoyed playing the social game with some of the social groups. This has given the children lots of opportunities to talk about different scenarios.

Gross motor has challenged some children especially when balancing and sudden changes of directions.
