Term 1

Whole Number

This term our focus will mainly be on revising, consolidating and extending our knowledge and skills in relation to Whole Number.  We will be revisiting the 4 main computation methods (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and further developing our written and mental strategies.

This term we have learnt how to work with numbers with 5+ digits.  We are now confident in written methods for addition and subtraction.  Our mental maths has improved too. We now know how to tackle multiplication sums using 2 different methods, the formal method and the grid. We have revised and up-leveled our skills.

Information Handling

We will also be carrying out a range of investigations to reinforce and extend our skills in collating, organising and presenting data.

We learnt how to present information in a range of graphs and tables such as line graphs, bar charts and scatter graphs. As a class we have enjoyed learning about data handling and doing investigations, especially the traffic survey!

Problem solving challenges are going to put us to the test!  This term we will be focusing on understanding and applying the main problem solving approaches we can use to help us.

We have learnt how to be systematic, reason logically and look for patterns when solving problems. Our class have found these problems tricky but we have been learning to persevere.

‘Wonder’ by RJ Palacio is our class novel this term.  From the first few chapters alone we know we are in for an exciting, yet emotional ride!  During the novel the 6 reading strategies will be modelled and we will be working together to revise and further develop our skills in applying them.

‘Wonder’ has been an exciting read for our class.  We have definitely developed our skills in visualizing, paraphrasing and summarising. As we are nearly finished the book we are looking forward to finding out what happens at the end of the novel.

This term we are aiming to give our writing a boost with a series of ‘quick impact’ lessons.  We will be trying hard to use ‘Ambitious Vocabulary’, ‘Cool Connectives’, ‘Outstanding Openers’ and ‘Powerful Punctuation’ to create some fantastic pieces.  Keep your eyes peeled for a sneak peak at some of our Secret Star Writers!

We have been motivated in our writing this term.  We all want to be a Star Writer as it is a great achievement!  We have been learning how to up-level our vocabulary, use better connectives and openers, and remember to have punctuation.

Spelling will be reinforced on a weekly basis.  New word lists will be issued each Monday and revised in class and at home.

We have been doing spelling tests and strategies to help us revise our spelling words. We have enjoyed competing against ourselves in our weekly spelling tests.

Health and Wellbeing

P7GM will have both PE sessions with Miss Robertson this term.  These will take place on a Wednesday morning and a Friday afternoon.

Last Friday we did a Dance-A-Thon in the hall to fundraise with Miss Robertson. Throughout the rest of the term we have been learning how to play touch rugby.  It has been great fun.

‘When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind’

– RJ Palacio.

Our class topic this term is very much related to our class novel ‘Wonder’.  Spreading a ‘Choose Kind’ message, ‘Wonder’ fits directly within Health and Wellbeing.  Through the Arts, Sciences and Technologies, we will be exploring topics such as Identity, Friendship, Self-Image, Resilience, Fairness and Equality.

Wonder has been an exciting topic.  We loved learning about August and his life, and we really could relate to it.  We shared a lot of his experiences and knew how he was feeling a lot of the time.  We also have learnt about how we should treat others and how we can be resilient in difficult situations.   Science was great fun too this term because we learnt about inheritance.  Making our Reebops was something we enjoyed the most!

As I am sure you are all aware, we are off on our residential trip to Dalguise on Monday.  We are all incredibly excited and looking forward to a fantastic week!

Dalguise was epic!  We learnt how to be independent and challenge ourselves.  Some of us faced our fears and took part in activities we didn’t think we could! Thank you PGL, Miss Milne, Miss Morrissey, Mr Hine and Miss Robertson.

Other News

French will begin this term.  Mrs Grant will be working with us on a Wednesday afternoon.  Ask us how we are getting on and we might even be able to teach you a thing or two!

In French we have been learning how to meet and greet each other and how to count to 10.  This week we learnt a song.

Just a few reminders to finish off;

  • Library books are changed on a Monday.
  • PE kits are required on Wednesday and Friday.
  • PE kits should be taken home on a Friday.
  • Homework is given out on Monday and should be returned on a Friday.
