P6/7M Learning Leaflet
Information for Parents
In maths this term we will be applying our knowledge and skills in a range of practical challenges and investigations. We will be looking closely at shape, position and movement, measure and data handling.
Continuing our learning from last term we will further develop our skills in ‘algebraic thinking’ by exploring equations. On a daily basis we will be revising and consolidating our mental strategies, computation methods and times tables – we will beat our ‘Beat That!’ scores this term!
This term we will be continuing to develop our reading strategies through a range of individual, paired and group activities. We have just chosen our new novels and are eager to find out what they are all about! The Dahl group voted to read ‘The Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and the Morpurgo and Rowling groups chose personal readers to study more independently and discuss together in a literature circle.
Our writing this term will be closely linked to our IDL topic; we will be learning how to write balanced arguments, factual reports and recounts. We will also use our skills in creating captivating characters and stimulating settings to produce some incredible imaginative writing – keep your eyes peeled for a sneak peak at some of our Secret Star Writers!
Spelling will continue to be reinforced on a weekly basis. New word lists will be issued each Monday and reinforced in class and at home.
Health and Wellbeing
Very shortly P6/7 will begin their ‘Choices for Life’ topic. They will explore and develop their understanding of the impact of risk-taking behaviour on their life choices, learning to make informed decisions and live a healthy lifestyle. They will be developing their understanding of the use and misuse of substances such as alcohol, drugs and tobacco. P6/7 will also take part in the ‘Living and Growing’ programme developing their awareness of sexual health, relationships and parenthood.
PE will continue to be on a Monday morning and a Tuesday afternoon. As the weather is improving please make sure you have suitable clothing for going outdoors.
This week we have been very busy deciding on our new topic, after much deliberation we decided on… Glashieburn 2015: The Election! With the up and coming General Election we are keen to find out what it is all about. By running our own mock election we hope to learn all of the in’s and out’s! Look out for our manifestos, posters, speeches and press releases coming soon!
As P7 will be out and about quite a bit this term P6 have decided to run a mini project of their own – tackling Mrs Wilson’s office Garden. Much in need of some TLC, P6 are going to put their Science, Numeracy, Art and Technology skills to the test to turn it all around! Look out Alan Titchmarsh!
Mandarin will continue this term and we have also been given the opportunity to take part in Calligraphy lessons. Ask us how we are getting on and we might even be able to teach you a thing or two!
Term 4 is a busy one, especially for P7. We have lots of exciting events coming up. P7 will be out and about to many transition events, our sports days are fast approaching, the Scottish Opera are visiting and we will be heading off on our class trip!
